Dated from the 3rd to the 1st century BC, La T\u00e8ne shields underwent morphological transformations, as reflected in their typological classification. <\/p>\n\n
Unlike their circular or curved counterparts from the Mediterranean and north-western Iberia, La T\u00e8ne shields developed an elliptical form with a flat surface, reinforced by a prominent central spine (spina<\/em>). The elongation of the shield and the addition of this reinforcement required the use of the boss as a structural element, serving to secure the spine, strengthen the overall construction and protect the hand at the grip. From the 3rd century BC onwards, the widespread adoption of this feature led to a diversification of boss shapes, enabling the definition of an evolutionary typology with chronological relevance (RAPIN 1991, 478\u2013485). <\/p>\n\n This particular item corresponds to a late La T\u00e8ne II type, dated from the late 2nd century BC to the mid-1st century BC, a classification consistently supported in the literature (ALMEIDA 1974, 15, est. I, no. 3; SOEIRO 1981, 239-240, est. I, no. 1; SILVA 1986, 205, est. XC, no. 6). <\/p>\n\n It represents a unique find in the north-western Iberian Peninsula and clearly differs from shield types depicted in Castro sculpture. Comparable examples are known from funerary contexts, including Emp\u00faries (ALMAGRO 1953, 309\u2013310, 319), the necropolis of Cabrera de Matar\u00f3 (AGUILL\u00d3 1939\u201340, 78), and the relief from Osuna (BELLIDO 1947, 238, 243).
