Glass bracelets or armlets (armillae<\/em>) are widely attested. Their use by both men and women dates back to early periods, serving aesthetic purposes, social distinction, or belief-related functions. This type, with a D-shaped section, whether plain or ribbed, is common throughout the Roman world and well documented in Portugal. Examples may be classified into three main types: those decorated with vertical incisions, diagonal incisions, and plain variants. When found out of context, such objects are difficult to date due to their long chronological span. In his study of bracelets from Karanis, Harden points out that black glass examples appear to belong to the Late Roman period, whereas polychrome glass examples occur in both pre- and post-Roman layers, having been recovered at that site pieces from the early 2nd century to the 5th century (HARDEN 1969, 47-72). In Late Roman contexts, decoration, when present, typically consists of incisions, ridges or ribs.
