Origin

Castro de Alvarelhos, Alvarelhos, Trofa.

Material

Ceramic. Compact yet friable fabric. Non-plastic inclusion consist predominatly of quartz, with mica in smaller proportions and occasional feldspar. Ferruginous nodules are widely present. Wheel marks are visible on both interior and exterior surfaces. Carefully executed exterior finish, with light polishing leaving non-plastic inclusions visible at the surface. Coated with a thick, well-adhering cream-coloured slip (N55).

Description

Fragment comprising rim and upper wall of a storage vessel (dolium) with an elliptical body. Flaring rim of angular profile, forming two divergent flat faces defined by an internal carination immediately below the lip. Externally, the rim develops a lowered flange with rounded edges. At the junction of rim and wall, a pronounced internal angular carination is present. The upper wall preserves a fully legible graffito: EME / ME / BONO / TUO (“Take me for your benefit”).

Graffito maximum length: 109 mm; maximum height: 55 mm.
