158 ARS Dish (African Red Slip Ware)

Origin

Castro de Alvarelhos, Alvarelhos, Trofa.

Material

ARS - African Red Slip Ware. Compact and hard fabric with laminar structure and homogeneous firing. Very fine, evenly distributed non-plastic inclusions composed of mica and feldspar. Uniform colour (N13). Surface of high-quality finish, well smoothed and highly polished, with a satin-like texture. Slight surface mottling resulting from burial conditions (S37).

Description

Complete profile of a dish with flat base marked by a fine groove forming a slight offset for resting. Curved, incurving wall. Rim with a triangular, pointed lip, with flat external face, terminating in a sharp carination marking the beginning of the wall curvature.

The decoration is organised in three concentric circles. The outer zone consists of reticulated squares of Hayes type 67 (HAYES 1972, 241, fig. 42a), alternating with rosettes of type 44B (HAYES 1972, 239, fig. 41h). The inner circle is decorated with ovoid palmettes arranged radially from the central circle, of style A1 (HAYES 1972, 229, fig. 38, 1a), alternating with rosettes of type 44B in the interstitial spaces.
