Prehistory

The numerous archaeological remains of human communities established since prehistoric times in the area of the present-day municipality of Santo Tirso allow us to discern their origins in Middle Paleolithic contexts. The interpretation of the monuments and associated remains paints a picture of cultural sequences recorded from the earliest manifestations of primary forms of gathering, through incipient forms of agricultural activity documented in the megalithic culture horizons, and, fundamentally, through the appreciation of the role of recognized regional scope identified during the Bronze Age, during which a high population density and social complexity were observed, directly related to the physical environment, particularly the exploitation of natural resources.
